The voice in this case is the voice of Ireland - in all the classic, sorrowful rebellion songs, Ireland is referred to as an old woman. Think of a kinder, gentler, Tommy Makem's "Four Green Fields." This song's meaning is very much along the same lines. The Voice of Ireland is speaking to her child(ren) of Ireland, us, so to speak. It's urging us to listen to our history, reminding us not to forget but yet to work to heal Ireland's pain and make her stronger for the future. Hunger, pain, blood in my fields, all referring to Ireland's history of famine, suppression, rebellion, "I will remain" - Ireland will always be there and she will prevail. It's a very heart-stirring song when considered by those who have lived it and are proud of their Irish history.
